*NOTE: VOLUNTEER TRAININGS ARE SCHEDULED PERIODICALLY -- For information on volunteering with LNC contact our director Kathy Morris by email at: kmorris@LouisvilleNatureCenter.org or call Kathy at 458-1328 between 9am - 4pm.
Our most popular volunteer activity is being a LNC Volunteer Education Assistant. Volunteer Education Assistants work along with the LNC staff presenting nature programs and leading hikes through Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve for schools, scouts, and those interested in nature education. The only requirements to assist with our programsare that you have a love of nature and the abilityto work with children and sometimes adult groups. Volunteers can give as much time as they would like in assisting with our education programs. We have school groups visiting almost every day of the week for our 2-hour programs.
Our brief training program provides volunteers with all the information and knowledge to get started. No previous wildlife knowledge is required---just an interest in learning more about nature in general and in furthering the Louisville Nature Center's mission of providing nature education and encouraging stewardship in an urban forest. And 'refresher course' sessions are provided regularly for all of our volunteers. For new and experienced volunteers, we do an in-depth training of one of our school programs as well as a general overview. Training sessions often include a hike and food!
The Nature Center also has the need for help with office work, cleaning gardening, and other jobs for which no training is required. Almost any skill is needed and appreciated at LNC, including:
- Help maintain the native plant and butterfly gardens
- Help rid the nature preserve of exotic and invasive plants
- Help repair and maintain trails
- Maintain the bird feeders and pond
- Cleaning the nature center facilites
- Assist with clerical work
- Assist with special events
- Design and build educational displays
- Assist with clerical work and answering phones
- Perform maintenance and carpentry services
We look forward to meeting you and appreciate your interest in helping us provide nature education and encourage stewardship in an urban forest!!
